A demanding style; the viewer must spend time, engage with the painting, and become immersed in it. These artists did not share a cohesive style, but a shared interest in conveying strong emotional or expressive content.

“I hope my painting has the impact of giving someone, as it did me, a feeling of his own totality, of his own separateness, of his own individuality.” in the same interview,  Newman describes “the subject as the crucial thing”, and points to the distinction between “the objects in the work vs. the subject of the work”.  His eloquent ideas have lingered in the studio…

Experimenting with his signature “zips” and his concepts, I began to think about our modern barcodes, meant to convey vital product information. What would your barcode look like? If it conveyed the scope of your lifetime, what colours and lines and textures could capture those episodes, those moments, those emotions?
